Reiki kanji

Mikao Usui

Reiki is a method of healing which channels universal healing energy into the human energy system using laying on of hands. It is a simple, non-invasive, and deeply relaxing form of therapy which rebalances the body's energy on the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual levels.

The word 'Reiki' is made up of two kanji or Japanese written characters, 'Rei' meaning 'spiritual' or 'soul', and 'Ki' meaning 'energy'. It describes the nature of the universal energy which is channelled during a healing treatment.

Reiki originated in Japan in the early 1900's with its founder Mikao Usui, and later spread to the West where it is now widely practiced and taught. For many years it was believed that Reiki had died out in Japan after the Second World War, but more recently it was found that Reiki still existed in Japan in its original form. This very pure form of Reiki is known as Jikiden Reiki, the word 'Jikiden' meaning 'direct teaching'.

During a Reiki treatment the client removes their shoes and lies on the healing bed. The therapist works by placing her hands lightly on or just above the client's body to rebalance the energy field, concentrating on problem areas.

Different people experience the Reiki energy in different ways. Some of the most commonly experienced sensations during a treatment are warmth, tingling, heat, and pulsing. Reiki works well on adults and children, as well as animals and plants.
